"Well, that's that," Liam murmured, tossing the crumpled tryout results into the recycling bin. He took a deep breath, the crisp autumn air filling his lungs. The biting wind nipped at his cheeks, and he pulled his jacket tighter. The varsity soccer team wanted someone else.

He knew he had given it his all. Every grueling practice, every sprint, every strategic play, had been in pursuit of that spot. Now, the season was beginning and he wasn't part of it. He walked toward the park, towards the river.

He felt a light, almost giddy feeling as he passed the empty soccer field, the goals standing like ghosts. He pictured himself playing his guitar, a dream he had long shelved. He realized he could finally start the band he had always talked about starting. The thought made him break into a grin.
