The small mountain town held a sense of tranquility. The crisp air filled her lungs with each stride. She watched the sunrise color the mountain peaks, feeling a peace she hadn't known in decades. She was almost home, the cabin she had built with her own two hands just beyond the crest of the hill. A woman, leaning against a weathered fence, called out a greeting. "Rebecca?" she asked, her voice tinged with surprise. "I don't expect you to remember me." Rebecca's hand tightened on her walking stick. The joy evaporated, leaving a cavernous absence.
