Gemotions

The evening air, thick with the scent of jasmine, was a balm to Ben. He was sprawled on his deck chair, a glass of iced tea sweating in his hand, the gentle hum of the cicadas a lullaby. He had just finished a challenging day at the hospital, one in which he saved a child's life. He felt… settled. Like he was exactly where he needed to be.

He sorted through a box of his grandmother’s belongings. There was a worn tapestry, a collection of vintage cookbooks, and then… a letter. Typed, on heavy cream paper, it was his grandfather’s resignation notice. Dated 1958. Ben read the words. His grandfather wanted to abandon a long-held career in engineering to pursue writing.

Ben’s chest tightened momentarily. He knew the story; his grandfather never followed through. He thought of his own long days at the hospital, the feeling of absolute exhaustion but also purpose. He sipped his tea, the cool liquid a relief. He closed his eyes, inhaling the sweet perfume of the flowers, a smile playing on his lips. His grandfather’s letter was tucked away, the feeling of satisfaction still present.
