The morning sun cast long shadows as Elias sipped his coffee on the porch swing. A gentle breeze rustled the leaves of his own oak tree, a comforting sound he cherished. He watched, amused, as Mrs. Gable, his neighbor, emerged from her house, her face a mask of bewildered horror. A massive branch of her ancient maple had succumbed to the night's storm, lying across her carefully manicured lawn. A quiet chuckle escaped Elias. He’d helped plant that maple sapling with Mrs. Gable decades ago.

He rose slowly, his back protesting the shift, but a smile remained etched on his face. He grabbed his toolbox, the familiar weight a comfort in his hands.
