“Well, that’s that, then,” I thought aloud, watching the enormous sycamore on Mrs. Davis's property. It had been teetering for years, and now it was down. It blocked her entire driveway. A deep breath filled my lungs as I strolled toward the backyard, my mind already working on solutions.

I found the garden hoe and started digging in the dirt to loosen the soil around my tomatoes. The sun warmed my skin. The earthy scent filled my nostrils. I loved this feeling. The quiet contentment of being productive. I had all the time in the world.
