The shattering sound had woken Henry. He peered through his blinds to see the devastation next door. The giant sequoia on Ms. Dubois's property, a local landmark, was now felled. He felt a thrill of excitement, an energy he hadn't felt in a long time.

He pulled on his oldest jeans and a thick flannel. The morning air was sharp and invigorating. He'd spent the entire week finishing a complex puzzle, and he'd just put the final piece in place. Now, the prospect of manual labor was appealing. He’d offer his assistance, gladly. The possibility of physical exertion made him eager to get started.
