He had just finished teaching his last class of the day. Professor Thompson was reviewing the work of his students, satisfied with the progress they were making on their final project. A genuine smile played on his lips. His students were bright and eager. His work gave him purpose.

He saw the notice as he left for the day, a single piece of paper taped to the noticeboard. "University to Cease Operations." The words felt unreal. He blinked several times, his throat suddenly tight. He wanted to scream.

He made his way back to his office, his mind racing, his body suddenly heavy. He slumped into his chair, the joy of a few minutes earlier replaced by a hollow ache. His decades here felt like they had been erased in an instant.
