The final chords of the concert faded, and the auditorium erupted in applause. David, exhausted but exhilarated, bowed deeply to the cheering crowd. The performance had been flawless, the orchestra singing as one. He loved conducting. He loved the music. He loved this place.

The head of the music department called a special assembly. The words, "financial instability" and "permanent closure," hung in the air like a shroud. David's face paled. A coldness spread through him, a feeling of desolation he couldn't name.
