The doctor's office felt sterile and cold. The announcement that his daughter was now a member of a religious cult left him feeling utterly helpless. He clenched his fists so hard, his nails dug into his palms.

He stared at the blank wall, his vision blurring. He felt a sharp pang in his chest, as if a physical weight had been placed upon him.

He couldn't speak, the words caught in his throat. He just kept shaking his head, over and over, as if trying to physically deny the reality of the situation. He felt the blood pounding in his ears.
