He stared at the blank wall, the email notification dismissed on his phone. Ethan's usually upbeat demeanor evaporated. The room seemed to shrink, the walls closing in. He felt the familiar, unwelcome sting behind his eyes. He threw the empty water bottle across the room.

He grabbed his coat and slammed the front door behind him, the sound echoing through the empty house. The street was no better. The sun seemed to glare with a mocking intensity, each person he passed seeming to look at him and laugh. He started walking faster, trying to outpace his feelings.
