The champagne flute nearly shattered in Amelia's grip. Seeing David saunter in, all charm and perfectly-slicked hair, felt like a punch to the gut. The wedding was supposed to be a joyous occasion for Chloe, a distraction from her own disastrous dating life. Now, all Amelia could focus on was the infuriating smugness plastered across David’s face.

Her jaw clenched, a muscle jumping in her cheek. She excused herself from her conversation with Chloe's mother, the older woman's words now just a droning hum. She needed air, needed distance.

Outside, the late afternoon sun beat down, but it did little to warm the icy knot forming in her stomach. She watched him from the shadows, his easy laughter grating against her ears. How dare he act like nothing had happened? Like he hadn’t ripped her heart out and stomped on it.
