The silence in the house was deafening, a heavy blanket suffocating her. He was "working late" again, a phrase that had become a bitter joke. She found his phone in the laundry basket, discarded carelessly. She scrolled through the call log, each name a stab of icy dread. Her pulse hammered in her ears.

She felt a tremor in her hands as she went through the list. She saw it, a number she didn't know, a name she'd never heard. She threw the phone at the wall.

When she heard the key in the lock, she was sitting on the couch, rigid, staring at the blank television screen.
