He felt the tremor in his hands, a physical manifestation of the rising heat within him. David sat opposite Mark, the cafe's bright lights suddenly harsh. The smell of coffee beans, usually comforting, was now sickening. "I told you, I was there. I was right beside you! How can you possibly say you don't remember?"

Mark just shrugged, a casual, dismissive gesture that threatened to send David over the edge. "Dude, it was a blur. We were wasted."

David clenched his jaw. He could feel a vein throbbing in his temple. The image, sharp and clear in his mind, of Mark’s face, pale with fear, the blood staining his jeans – it was all so real. He wanted to leap over the table and grab Mark by the collar. He wanted to shake the truth out of him.

"It wasn’t a blur for me," he ground out, each word carefully measured. "I remember everything." The words felt inadequate, hollow.
