He’d always felt a certain distance from his mother, a sense of being observed. Finding the box, crammed with every assignment he'd ever produced, confirmed his suspicions. Liam felt a cold knot tighten in his stomach.

He was in her old office, sifting through paperwork, trying to make sense of her financial affairs. The box was tucked away in the back of the closet, almost hidden. He saw his own name, again and again, scrawled across file folders. He sat down heavily in her chair.

He didn't bother to open the box. He didn’t need to. He knew what was inside. He leaned back, his eyes fixed on the ceiling. A slow burn of something akin to rage coursed through his veins, making him feel hollowed out, empty.
