"No. Absolutely not," Sarah repeated into the phone, her voice tight. She was sitting in the bustling coffee shop, amidst the aroma of roasting beans and the chatter of other patrons. A sudden, sharp heat rose within her, making her cheeks flush. Liam, her husband, had been anticipating this party for months. The hours she'd invested, the secrets she'd kept, the intricate decorations she’d spent time on. All for a reason that, she realized, was completely useless now.

She slammed the phone back onto the table, the small action the only outward manifestation of her mounting anger. She pushed the cup of coffee away from her, the warmth from the beverage suddenly repulsive. She clenched and unclenched her hands on the table, wanting to scream, to lash out.
