The front door slammed shut, the sound echoing through the otherwise silent apartment. Elias ripped off his tie and flung it onto the couch. He had come home early, expecting a cozy evening with Chloe, but instead, he’d found a handwritten letter on the table in Russian. His grandmother’s language.

He stormed towards the bedroom, his pulse hammering in his ears. He found Chloe on the bed, her face buried in a book. A book he recognized.

"What do you think you're doing?" The words were barely audible, a strangled sound.
