Gemotions

The envelope, addressed simply to "Occupant," had a cheap, generic, heart-shaped card. Inside, a saccharine greeting, unsigned. He felt a knot tighten in his stomach. He crumpled the card, shoving it into his pocket.

He kicked at a loose stone on the sidewalk as he walked back to his apartment, the action purely out of impulse. His hands were clenched into fists, the nails digging into his palms. The silence of the afternoon was oppressive, amplifying the thrumming anger inside him.

He pictured the smug face of whoever had done this, that anonymous sender, enjoying the chaos they had created. The thought was enough to make him want to smash something.
