The realtor, with her saccharine smile, the inspector with his cursory glance – all complicit. He kicked at the baseboard, splintering the wood, sending a cloud of ancient dust billowing into the air. His hands shook as he fumbled for the light switch inside the newly found opening.

He pictured the smug look on the previous owner's face, the way he'd talked about the "charm" of the house. He imagined the man laughing at him, gloating in his ignorance. He felt a burning sensation in his chest.
