The dampness in the air, the musty smell – it all fed the rising heat in her chest. Everything had felt wrong since the closing, but now, this. Lisa ripped at the wallpaper, the floral pattern tearing away to reveal a solid wood door. She’d trusted them, trusted the inspectors, the sellers. Now, this blatant disregard.

She slammed the heel of her hand against the door, over and over, until her knuckles throbbed. Each blow was a release, a desperate attempt to vent the frustration building inside her. The wood remained stubbornly intact.
