He felt a sudden, inexplicable urge to run, to escape the suffocating weight of the situation. He’d just seen *him* – her partner – emerge from her apartment building. The truth, previously a shadowy fear, materialized, a crushing weight on his shoulders. He felt a buzzing in his ears. He wanted to disappear, to erase himself from this scene. He forced himself to walk towards the building and his legs felt heavy, as if made of lead. He took the stairs two at a time, determined to speak the words he’d rehearsed.
