He slammed the door of his cramped apartment, the sound echoing in the silent hallway. A wave of heat flushed across his face. Inside, nestled amidst a pile of discarded flyers, lay the wallet. The sheer audacity of it! He hadn’t had a decent meal in days. He saw the wallet in the park while jogging. A woman, distracted, probably wouldn’t miss this.

His palms itched, his fingers flexing involuntarily. The smooth leather offered him a mocking reassurance. Inside the wallet, the wealth he so desperately needed was within reach, and he was being denied. The thought was like a burning brand.

He felt the tremors start, small at first, then spreading throughout his body. He ripped the wallet apart, tearing at the lining and then ripped the notes. Then he sank to the floor, panting, the remains of his frustration in his hands.
