The kitchen smelled of burnt coffee. Daniel stood over the stove, staring at the remnants of his failed attempt to make breakfast. He’d barely slept. The test results, downloaded this morning, had shattered him.

His adoptive parents had always insisted on absolute honesty. Now he knew that was a lie. He moved around his apartment like a machine, going through the motions to keep himself busy. The anger buzzed under his skin, a constant, low-grade hum.

He poured the charred coffee down the drain, the dark liquid swirling away. He needed to be alone, somewhere to be silent. He had to think.
