The cold seeping into David's bones wasn't just from the open window. It was also the chill that had settled in his heart. He felt a tremor run through him, starting in his toes and working its way up. He kicked at a stray shoe, sending it skittering across the floor. "This is not happening," he said, his voice a flat, emotionless drone.

He felt the muscles in his back tense, his shoulders drawing up towards his ears. The thought of cleaning up after a cat, the litter box stench, the fur everywhere… it was a nightmare. This was her attempt to manipulate him, to get her way, and it made him physically sick.

He crossed his arms, staring at Liam. The boy looked smug, pleased with himself. David's chest felt like it was about to explode. He took a deep breath, trying to steady himself, but it didn't help.
