Gemotions

The phone felt heavy in her hand. Her grip tightened, the plastic digging into her palm. She’d been on the verge of calling her best friend, Maya, when the text message arrived. The words, so innocently strung together, had the effect of a physical slap. Jessica reread them, each word twisting the knife further.

A burning sensation began in her chest, quickly spreading to her limbs, leaving her feeling restless and agitated. Maya, her supposed confidante, had scheduled her own party on the same day! After Jessica had spent weeks curating her event, painstakingly arranging every detail.

She tossed the phone onto the couch with enough force to make it bounce. This could not be allowed to stand. She would somehow reclaim the day, the joy, what was rightfully hers. She would fight.
