"That's just not true," she muttered, the words barely audible. The photographs mocked her. Her mother, the woman who had always portrayed herself as the long-suffering victim. Now, here she was, in Italy, the photos depicting a glamorous, carefree woman she had never known. The anger clawed at her insides, a burning, corrosive feeling. She threw the album across the room. She watched it hit the wall with a hollow thud. She wanted to obliterate the whole, fabricated history. She wanted to claw it away from her, to erase it all.
