“I can’t believe this,” Mark said aloud, the words barely a whisper. He reread the email, his eyes darting back and forth. The announcement seemed a cruel joke. He had dedicated his career to this company, sacrificed so much.

His stomach churned. He felt as if a heavy weight had settled on his chest, making it hard to breathe. The familiar surroundings of his office, the framed certificates, the photos of his colleagues, now seemed like relics of a lost world.

He stood up, his chair scraping against the floor. He paced the small confines of his office, his agitation a physical manifestation. The thought of the impending changes, the uncertainty, sent a wave of nausea washing over him.

He slammed his fist against the wall, leaving a dent in the plaster.
