The car screeched to a halt in front of the grocery store, the tires spitting gravel. Amelia punched the steering wheel, the horn blaring in a long, discordant wail. The text. To the ex. The one she swore she'd blocked. "You are such a loser." Meant for her friend, to commiserate.

Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the silence. She felt a burning sensation in her throat. She gripped the steering wheel so hard her knuckles were bone-white. She wanted to drive, just keep driving, until she had driven herself into another state, where no one knew her or her mistake. She considered her options, her teeth grinding in time with her racing heart.
