He stared at the congratulatory card, the words a mockery. His hands were shaking so badly he could barely hold it. He’d invested everything, every late night, every cancelled weekend, every ounce of his energy into this company. All for what? To be overlooked. Again.

He crumpled the card into a ball. The paper crackled loudly in the quiet office. He wanted to shout, to make them understand the injustice of it all.

Instead, he took a deep, shuddering breath and walked to the water cooler, forcing a smile onto his face as he passed his newly promoted colleague.
