He stared at the handwriting, so familiar yet alien. It was the same penmanship, the same flourishes, but the words… they were a mockery. The damage was done. The wound festered. This apology, offered after so much time, was a bitter joke.

The letter was crumpled in her hands, her fingers squeezing with a ferocity that threatened to tear the paper apart. Her breath hitched, shallow and rapid. She felt a profound emptiness, a yawning abyss where forgiveness should have been.

She wanted to scream. To scream until her voice was raw and broken. Instead, she threw the letter into the wastebasket, as if casting it into a forgotten void.
