The pawnshop’s dim lighting couldn't dispel the gloom inside Maya. The day had been particularly difficult. She felt as though a heavy weight sat upon her shoulders, and everything felt just…dim. She tried to appear as if she had a purpose, but she found it difficult to maintain.

She lingered at the display cases, feeling the apathy settle deeper. Then, something caught her eye. It was a ring, the delicate design instantly familiar. Her grandmother's engagement ring.

Her breath hitched. She hadn't seen it in years. She forced herself to approach the counter, her legs feeling unsteady. "I... I'd like to ask about that ring." Her voice was barely a whisper.
