Gemotions

The chipped mug warmed Amelia's hands, but the heat didn't seem to penetrate the chill that had settled in her bones. She stared out the kitchen window, watching the rain streak down the glass, blurring the already muted colors of the garden. Each drop seemed to mirror the slow, sluggish rhythm of her thoughts, each one a weight dragging her down.

"More coffee, dear?" Her mother's voice, usually a comfort, felt like a gentle obligation. Amelia just shook her head, the movement heavy. The familiar floral wallpaper seemed to press in on her, a suffocating embrace of memories she couldn't escape.

She knew she should be grateful, that her parents had welcomed her back without a word of judgment. But the gratitude felt thin, a fragile thing that couldn't quite bridge the chasm of her current state. She just wanted the day to end.
