The silence of the house was deafening. John wandered from room to room, touching objects, each one a ghost of a past life. The photographs on the mantelpiece, snapshots of happier times, mocked his current state.

He found himself staring at his reflection in the hallway mirror, his face a stranger to him. The lines around his eyes seemed deeper, his posture slumped. He felt a profound sense of disconnect, as if he were observing himself from a great distance.

A pang of hunger hit him, but the thought of preparing food was exhausting. He eventually shuffled towards the kitchen, but the effort felt monumental.
