The track seemed longer, the air thicker. Sarah stood at the starting line, the familiar adrenaline absent. She was a sprinter, a firecracker unleashed in the 100-meter dash. Now, she was to run the 800. “Endurance, Sarah. We need more endurance,” the coach had said, a concerned frown etching lines on his face. She felt a cold dread creep through her as she waited for the starting pistol. The other runners seemed to buzz with anticipatory excitement, but she felt as though she were submerged in a vat of cold water, her body heavy and unresponsive.
