"So, what do you think of this?" Mark asked, holding up the blueprint. His voice sounded hollow in the vast workshop. He watched his hands, tracing the lines of the design. He knew he was talking to himself. Mr. Evans, his mentor, wasn't there to offer his usual critique. The hammer lay heavy in Mark's hand.

He felt a deep sense of irritation. Evans, who had taught him everything, had just vanished. Mark lowered the blueprint to the workbench. The metal felt cold beneath his fingertips. He felt adrift, the silence of the workshop amplifying his sense of loss. He slammed the blueprint down.
