Rain lashed against the windows of Leo's apartment, mirroring the tempest in his chest. He hadn’t touched the toast he’d made, the butter already congealing in its pale yellow squares. The interview had been two days ago, and Maya, his best friend, had been applying for the same position. The silence between them these past hours felt heavier than the soaked concrete outside.

He shoved the chair away from the table, the scrape of its legs an unwelcome noise. The city stretched outside, a grey expanse blurring in the downpour. He felt his shoulders slump as he walked to the bedroom, the weight of the unanswered emails and the unfulfilled potential of the job offer pressing down on him.

“Just get it over with,” he muttered, grabbing his jacket. He needed a distraction, some kind of relief, even if it was just a walk in the deluge.
