The string quartet’s rendition of “Here Comes the Bride” was playing, a melody that usually brought a smile to Leo’s face. Today, though, it felt like a dirge. He picked at the corner of a canapé, the buttery richness doing nothing to appease his inner turmoil.

He spotted Sophie across the room, laughing with a group of friends. Her laughter, once a song he’d known so well, now felt like a distant echo. The elegant setting, bathed in soft candlelight, seemed to mock him with its beauty.

His stomach clenched. He didn't want to engage, didn't want to feign polite conversation. He wanted to disappear.

He moved towards the buffet, hoping to hide himself behind a platter of roasted vegetables, as Sophie drifted closer.

“Leo! Fancy seeing you,” she exclaimed, her voice bright.
