He felt the weight of the suit, the starched collar a physical restriction. He'd chosen it hoping to look presentable, but now it felt like a prison. He scanned the room, the joyous revelry grating on his nerves.

Then, there she was, Chloe. She looked radiant, talking animatedly with the best man. He felt a dull ache behind his ribs. The wedding cake, with its perfect tiers, seemed utterly inedible.

He took a deep breath, trying to regain some semblance of composure. It was no use.

Chloe looked up and their eyes met. He froze, the room tilting slightly. “David! Didn’t know you were coming,” she said. Her smile didn't reach her eyes.
