The crystal chandeliers glittered overhead, each sparkling facet reflecting the joyous occasion in a blinding display. James felt like a ghost, fading into the background. He’d barely touched his food. He sought solace near the window, gazing at the distant lights of the city.

He caught sight of her, Sophia. She looked incredible, and her smiles were as radiant as the lights. His shoulders slumped further. The realization, the memory of her, crashed over him.

He pushed away from the window, wanting to vanish.

And then she was there, her voice a soft, gentle query, "James, are you alright?"
