Gemotions

The world seemed muted to David. He’d gone to the gallery, as he did every Saturday. The opening night of Sarah’s new exhibit, showcasing her “successful” career in photography, was now a painful memory. He’d always admired her, her supposed talent, and the glamorous life she claimed to lead. He’d even secretly fantasized about being with her. Now, he felt only a sluggish lethargy.

He wandered through the brightly lit rooms, pretending to admire the photographs. He knew they were his, not hers. His own work. He hadn't been to any gallery recently, however. His work was now hers. He felt a sharp pang of something like betrayal; a betrayal of a life they would not share.

He bumped into a well-dressed woman, apologizing automatically, the words feeling empty. He wanted to scream.
