The rain hammered against the windows, mirroring the rhythm in Amelia’s chest. Another missed call, another unanswered text. Liam had been acting off for weeks, easily irritated, perpetually on edge. She watched him now, perched on the edge of the bed, phone clutched in his hand, a faraway look in his eyes. He’d been “working late” nearly every night, and the excuses were wearing thin. Amelia pushed herself off the couch, a heavy sigh escaping her lips. The silence in the apartment was deafening, the air thick with unspoken words.

He looked up as she moved, a flicker of something unreadable in his gaze. He quickly slipped the phone into his pocket, his face hardening as he turned away. The usual kiss goodbye was replaced with a quick, awkward brush of the lips.
