The air in the car felt thick, the silence between them almost palpable. The phone calls, always at night, always with a lowered voice, were like a poison seeping into the relationship. She watched as her partner, Ben, nervously fiddled with the radio. She felt an odd chill. The familiar joy of their road trips had been replaced by a quiet dread. She gazed out of the window.

The countryside, once so comforting, looked bleak. Everything had lost its luster.
