Gemotions

David felt a cold, dull ache in his jaw. He was on his way to his son's first day of high school. His excitement was a fragile thing, easily shattered. The drive was long. He saw the sign welcoming students to the high school. He recalled the building's faded brick, its imposing presence. His memories were not pleasant.

In the English classroom, the teacher introduced herself. "I'm Ms. Harrison." He froze. The name hung in the air, a phantom limb. His Ms. Harrison, from decades ago. She had a voice that echoed with both steel and warmth.

He felt the familiar knot of tension forming in his shoulders. He looked at his son, beaming with enthusiasm. He hoped, with all of his heart, that his son would have a better experience than he had. It was a silent plea.
