He stared at the ceiling, the patterns of the plaster blurring in his vision. The article, the culmination of his research, was now credited to someone else. His breath hitched in his chest. His hands clenched into fists. He felt a deep weariness, a profound exhaustion that seeped into his bones.

He pulled the covers over his head, shutting out the world. The mundane sounds of the city, the distant sirens and car horns, now seemed hostile. He longed for the silence of oblivion. He stayed in bed, wishing the sun would not rise.
