The sunlight streaming through the window seemed excessively bright, a stark contrast to the way Amelia felt inside. The request came from Brad, who'd systematically dismantled her confidence throughout middle school. Her fingers trembled slightly as she hovered over the "accept" button. She hadn't eaten all day. The unease inside her was more potent than any hunger she felt.

She imagined his smirk, the way he’d always found her insecurities. Memories, unwelcome and unwanted, flooded her mind. She thought of a school dance, a cruel joke, a whispered insult. She finally clicked 'delete', the action a small victory, but it left her feeling like she was still the scared little girl he had once so enjoyed teasing. The taste of dust lingered in her mouth.
