The aroma of burnt coffee filled Charlotte’s apartment, another sign of her inattention. The friend request was from Chloe, her main adversary from the school years. She’d been staring at a blank canvas for hours, her art supplies scattered around her. The frustration had built to a dull throb in her head. Her creative well had run dry.

She recalled the petty arguments, the jealousy, the way Chloe had managed to undermine her at every turn. A bitterness, sharp and acidic, welled up inside her. She felt drained, as if all her energy had been siphoned away. She finally pushed herself away from the table, a feeling of defeat clinging to her.
