“But… why?” He asked, his voice cracking slightly. The person on the other end of the phone gave a vague, unsatisfactory answer. He slowly lowered the phone, the world around him suddenly muted.

He walked over to the window, the cheerful buzz of the street outside felt at odds with his internal state. He watched the rain begin to fall, the grey sky mirroring his mood.

He reached for the half-eaten cake on the kitchen counter, then hesitated and pushed it away. The effort of eating felt like too much.
