The silence of his apartment felt like a heavy blanket, stifling and suffocating. Liam had spent the day avoiding his colleagues, the sting of the salary disparity still raw. He couldn't bring himself to answer their calls or return their emails.

He stared at the TV screen, the images flickering before his eyes, but he couldn't concentrate. The world seemed to be moving at a frantic pace, and he felt left behind. He got a sudden headache.

He picked up the phone to call his wife, but thought better of it. He did not want to burden her with his troubles, not tonight. He just wanted to be still.
