A heavy lethargy had settled over Sarah all afternoon. The world outside, usually vibrant and alive, seemed muted, distant. The usual post-work buzz was absent, replaced by a quiet that felt oppressive. She’d retreated to the bedroom, pulling the covers over her head, wishing the day would just disappear.

A low, unfamiliar sound drifted in. It came from the living room, a soft, lilting cadence. Pushing back the blankets, she slowly made her way to the doorway.

Her partner, Ben, was sitting on the floor, surrounded by books and papers, a tablet propped before him. He was speaking, carefully, haltingly. But the language - the intonation - was unmistakably hers. She felt something cold trickle down her spine.
