The cafe smelled of coffee and regret. A bitter taste coated Ava's mouth. "Daniel" had stood her up, again, citing a "family emergency." She rubbed her temples, trying to ward off the building headache. The world felt muffled, distant.

She saw her then, across the crowded room. She was talking with a waiter, her expression mirroring Ava's own sense of bewilderment.

"Ava?" the other woman called out, a note of hesitancy in her voice.

The world seemed to spin slightly. Ava simply nodded. Everything seemed to blur, like the coffee stain on the table in front of her. She looked down at the table and felt a surge of sadness.
