The vibrant colors of the invitation seemed to scream at Ethan. He tossed it aside with a grunt, the paper crinkling as it landed on the table. The thought of going filled him with a sense of dread.

He ran a hand through his hair, the gesture failing to dislodge the feeling of unease that had settled deep within him. He felt as if he were walking through molasses, each movement an effort.

He sat on the couch, the cushions offering little comfort. The weight of expectations and disappointments pressed down on him, making it difficult to breathe. He wanted to curl up and disappear.
